Works as L3 for Ethereum

Social Graph project Lens Protocol announced today that it has launched a beta version of its scaling solution for developers.

The purpose of launching the new solution is to improve the scalability of apps that incorporate social network functionality. Lens Protocol claims its solution is “Layer 3” because it runs on the network of Ethereum (ETH) scaling solution Polygon (MATIC).

Introducing Bonsai, an Optimistic L3 scaling solution, that will process transactions at hyperscale, and is designed to support the next generation of web3 social users.

Lens Protocol is a project started by Web3 company “Aave Companies”, which has a track record of building a major DeFi (decentralized finance) project “Aave”. A social graph is a human relationship on the Internet such as followers. App developers can easily introduce social network functions by utilizing Lens Protocol’s technology.

At the time of the announcement, the name of this solution was “Bonsai”, but later it was explained that it was a name that already existed in the Web3 domain. At the time of writing this article, we are looking for a new name.

This solution will play a role in processing transactions on polygons, and as a result, will play a role in lowering transaction costs. Currently, the biggest challenge for decentralized social networks is to allow users to fully manage their own content while maintaining the ease of use of traditional SNS. Aimed at solving the problem.

specific role

Below is the table from this announcement. With Ethereum as layer 1 and polygons as layer 2, the purpose, cost, security, etc. of each layer are compared.

announcement

According to the above image, the main roles of each layer are as follows.

  • Ethereum: Security
  • Polygon: Profiles, Networking, Tokenizing Content
  • Bonsai (former name): Network activity such as posting, following, etc.
  • Arweave/Bundlr: Data storage

Since this solution is still in beta, it is limited to transactions such as posts, comments, and reposts (mirror). In the future, we will continue to develop and expand the functions while listening to ideas and receiving feedback from the community.

In addition, as a scaling solution, it can also be used for general use cases, so it can be used outside of social networks.
