American Express files for metaverse, NFT-related trademarks

Financial giant American Express is reportedly planning to enter the metaverse and NFT industry, recent trademark filings from the company have suggested. In total, the multinational firm has applied for seven trademark registrations, all of which are related to metaverse and NFTs.

The applications consist of several crypto-related services and products that American Express could offer, such as cryptocurrency trading services, tokens and NFT, an online marketplace for NFTs, travel agency services, and even entertainment in the virtual world.

The card payments company is also looking to provide its various real-world services in the virtual world, covering “assistance with electronic transfers of money in the metaverse and other virtual worlds; Banking services in the metaverse and other virtual worlds; Issuing and processing payments of virtual prepaid cards, virtual prepaid gift cards,” and more.

Discovered by trademark attorney Mike Kondoudis on Tuesday, one of the applications filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office seeks to trademark its iconic Centurion logo and other designs for metaverse use.

“Amex is always monitoring emerging technologies to see how they could benefit our customers, and the metaverse is a space we’re following,” an AmEx spokesperson told Business Insider but did not reveal further details.

AmEx is the latest traditional financial entity to join the burgeoning industry. Several of them, including JP Morgan, the NYSE, Visa, and MasterCard, have all ramped up their efforts to grab a corner in the space. Financial giant JP Morgan recently opened a lounge in the metaverse platform Decentraland and the NYSE also filed for metaverse-related trademark applications.
