Apple and AI
During Apple’s earnings call on Wednesday, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company would continue to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) into its products. On the other hand, he pointed out that there are issues to be resolved.
Cook said AI is a key focus for Apple, without mentioning a specific “product roadmap.” He points out that the company is already incorporating AI into some of its products, saying its potential is very interesting and that it intends to continue to do so in the future.
He said existing products such as fall detection, crash detection and electrocardiograms (ECGs) already leverage AI systems to help prevent accidental injuries and save lives on the Apple Watch.
On the other hand, Cook did not mention specific products, but pointed out that AI has several problems to be solved. This could suggest that Apple is taking a more cautious approach to Microsoft and Google’s rush to integrate generative AI into search.
What is generative AI?
AI that automatically creates new content and designs from input data and instructions. It generates media content such as sentences, images, music, and videos, as well as program code, to assist human creativity and imagination.

Development of generative AI
Microsoft is aggressively incorporating generative AI language models like ChatGPT and image creation tools like Midjourney into its Bing search functionality. Meanwhile, Apple has yet to release a generative AI product.
Since the release of “ChatGPT”, AI has become an important theme in the tech industry, and the competition for development among companies has intensified. However, since the black box nature of the background technology invites privacy violations and ethical and social concerns, there are voices calling for regulation, mainly from the non-profit Future of Life Institute and prominent entrepreneurs and researchers.
Major governments are considering regulatory measures against generative AI software like ChatGPT. The European Union (EU) is proposing a bill called the Artificial Intelligence Act, which includes requirements for oversight and transparency of high-risk AI systems.
In April, the UK government announced the creation of a task force aimed at developing safe AI (artificial intelligence) and an initial investment of £100 million (approximately ¥17 billion).
