BTC White Paper on macOS

On the 25th, Apple released “macOS 13.4 Ventura Beta 3”, a modified version of the current OS, for developers.

Around April 6, it was discovered that a white paper on the crypto asset (virtual currency) Bitcoin (BTC) was hidden inside the current macOS, which attracted attention. However, Apple-related news outlet 9to5Mac has confirmed that the file has been deleted in the latest OS.

The PDF file of the white paper was included in macOS Mojave and later released in 2018, and existed in a hidden file called an internal tool “VirtualScanner.app”. This tool was used by Apple engineers to develop and test image capture apps.

At the time the file was discovered, some media outlets and users speculated that it was an Easter egg incorporated by Bitcoin advocates inside Apple.

The latest version removes the entire “VirtualScanner.app”, but Apple made no mention of this.

motive unknown

9to5Mac claimed that removing the tool, which did not contain sensitive information, backed up the theory that the Bitcoin whitepaper was never meant to be found by the general public. A news story a few weeks ago received so much attention that it is possible that Apple eventually deleted the file from its system.

The Bitcoin White Paper is said to be included in Apple computers (MacBook, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Pro, etc.) with macOS Mojave or later versions released in 2018. One way to check if the white paper is saved on macOS is to use Terminal and enter the following instructions (prompts):

open /System/Library/Image Capture/Devices/VirtualScanner.app/Contents/Resources/simpledoc.pdf

This will display a list of files associated with the screensaver. If you have a file named “VirtualScanner.app”, enter the command “open VirtualScanner.app” and press “return” to launch “VirtualScanner.app” and display the Bitcoin whitepaper. be done.
