Shiba Inu (SHIB/USD) and Dogecoin (DOGE/USD) are once again in the headlines. The two largest meme coins are now in the political arena after the senator for Arizona, Wendy Rodgers, brought them into the limelight in a tweet.
The senator took to Twitter, opining that while she did not understand the two meme coins, she understood the concept of freedom; hence people needed to be free to buy the cryptocurrencies they wanted to invest in.
Arizona senator endorses DOGE and SHIB
Rodgers’ tweet was supported by the Dogecoin and Shiba Inu communities. However, some crypto community members did not support the endorsement of the meme coin. XRP supporters took to the comments section replying with messages that endorsed Ripple’s native token.
Rodgers gave in to these comments and asked the XRP community to provide more details about the meme coin. The XRP community was all too eager to get a mention from the pro-crypto senator. However, this action sparked an earlier debate between the Bitcoin community and the XRP community, with XRP being referred to as a scam.
Ripple has been entangled in a lawsuit with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for more than one year now. In December 2020, the SEC filed a case against Ripple and its executives for engaging in an unregistered securities offering. According to the regulatory body, XRP is a security, not a token.
Winning over the crypto community
Rodgers has become a popular supporter of cryptocurrencies, making her win over the crypto community. The senator has already filed a bill seeking to allow the use of Bitcoin as legal tender in Arizona. This bill is currently awaiting voting. However, the chances of it being approved on a federal level are slim.
Rodgers has also previously stated that she had plans to make Arizona a crypto-friendly location by creating a better regulatory framework. Other Republicans have also shown positive stands regarding the crypto space. A Republican candidate contesting to be the senator for Ohio, Josh Mandel, announced his support for Bitcoin last month, but this was met with heavy criticism.
