AscendEx hackers move $1.5M worth of stolen Ether to Uniswap

AscendEX hackers have become restless.

Two months after stealing cryptocurrencies worth nearly $78 million from Singapore-based crypto exchange AscendEX, the cyber attackers have begun to transfer funds to decentralized exchange Uniswap.

AscendEX suffered a large security breach in December 2021 after attackers hacked its hot wallet and stole $60 million worth of Ether, $9.2 million from Binance Smart Chain, and $8.5 million from Polygon at the time.

The hacker(s) stole large amounts of stablecoins – USDC and USDT – from the networks, as well as other coins, including Shiba Inu (SHIB), Aave (AAVE), Compound (COMP), and some ERC-20 tokens.

According to data analytics provider PeckShield, the hackers moved 560 Ether, worth $1.5 million at press time, to Uniswap. The attackers had swiped ERC-20 tokens via Uniswap and Tornado Cash before aggregating Ethereum to their wallets.

A similar move was seen earlier this month after an address related to the Bitfinex hack transferred more than 94,000 Bitcoins to unknown wallets. The figures were a big part of what was stolen in one of the biggest cryptocurrency hacks to date.

However, just a week after, the US Department of Justice was revealed to have moved the stolen Bitcoin. Along with it, the DOJ announced that it has arrested the couple allegedly behind the $4.5 billion heist.
