Avalanche (AVAX), about 1 hour downtime after update

Avalanche down for about 1 hour

The crypto asset (virtual currency) Avalanche (AVAX) blockchain stopped for about an hour after the update “Banff 12 (AvalancheGo v1.9.12)” implemented on the 23rd.

The time period when the network was down was around 11:00 on the 23rd in Japan time, and Avalanche’s “Contract (C) Chain”, which is mainly compatible with EVM (Ethereum virtual machine), was affected. seems to have received it.

Huh? Absolutely not, network has been unstable for a bit over an hour. It was a bug with v1.9.12. Fix was just released, network is starting to stabilize again.

Kevin Sekniqi, COO and chief architect of Avalanche developer Ava Labs, acknowledged that v1.9.12 had bugs, but emphasized that the network is already stabilizing.

Even after the network was restored, block data was not updated in explorers such as SnowTrace, causing confusion, but it was updated soon.

Sekniqi called on Avalanche validator node operators to update to the fixed upgrade “Banff 14 (v.1.9.14)”.

Neither Ava Labs nor Avalanche have publicly commented on the trouble (at time of writing).

Due to the network outage, Korean crypto asset (virtual currency) exchanges Upbit and Bithumb announced that they have suspended deposit and withdrawal services for Avalanche (AVAX). It has been reported that the major exchange Binance has also stopped deposits and withdrawals of Tether (USDT) tokens circulating on Avalanche.

What is Banff 12

Avalanche Banff 12 (v1.9.12) is aimed at new features, optimizations and bug fixes, according to Patrick O’Grady, head of development at Ava Labs. Implemented a preparation function for future Cortina upgrades. It also fixed a “slow shutdown” bug that caused problems when shutting down Avalanche nodes.

Banff 12 was backwards compatible with the previous version (v1.9.0) and its implementation was optional.

It’s not always rainbows and butterflies on the #Avalanche HyperSDK…sometimes I introduce bugs and have to fix them.

Today, I encountered an interesting one when running CI where a newly created node would not become “ready” (even after 30 minutes): https://t.co/IvdvlDQhN9… https://t.co/DL4tk7TNbT

Similar to Avalanche, it has been confirmed that block production stops on multiple blockchains. This is mainly an issue for smart contract platforms.

On February 25th, Solana Blockchain performed a network update to 1.14 with the aim of improving processing speed and scalability. rice field.

Solana Labs released a report on the 1st about the trouble that occurred last week. While the cause is still under investigation, measures have been taken to prevent recurrence.

In February, a 157-block reorganization (reorg) occurred on the Polygon (MATIC) blockchain. A reorganization (reorg) is a chain divergence that occurs when two blocks are mined (generated) at the same time in a decentralized blockchain network. The longer chain in terms of number of subsequent blocks is considered normal and the other chain is deleted.

This leads to adverse effects such as degraded user experience such as transaction delays and uncertainties, and increased node costs.

On the other hand, Bitcoin (BTC) has maintained a stable network for about 14 years since its birth in 2009. It also has a very high BTC hash rate (323.22 EH/s) compared to other blockchains, and is rated highly resistant to 51% attacks.
