After a charity auction where an NFT inspired by the life of Bill Murray was sold, the famous actor’s digital wallet was hacked for almost 110 Wrapped Ethereum (wETH), or some $174,000.

The exclusive NFT was sold on Coinbase, raising 119 wETH ($185,000). After the auction, the attackers most likely planted a dangerous link that provided them with access to Murray’s wallet once the wallet’s managers followed the link.

The stolen money was supposed to be directed toward caring for a three-year-old girl who is battling a rare gene mutation. Luckily, the runner-up bidder in the auction decided to cover the stolen funds following the theft.

Murray’s wallet, which is managed by the companies Chive and Project Venkman, holds another 800 Bill Murray NFTs. They remain secure and are set to be sold next week, along with an additional 200 NFTs.
