Binance Airdrops to Disaster Victims

Major crypto asset (virtual currency) exchange Binance announced on the 7th that it will airdrop Binance Coin (BNB) to users affected by the earthquake in Turkey.

Targeting 10 cities, including Kahramanmaras, which were heavily affected by the earthquake, we will identify users based on address proofs submitted before February 6. The donation from the airdrop is about 13,000 yen ($100) per user, and the total amount is expected to be about 650 million yen (about $5 million).

Additionally, the Binance Charity Foundation, the philanthropic and giving arm of Binance, has launched a public donation address for anyone to donate. Funds sent to this address will be converted into Turkish lira and delivered to accredited NGOs to assist victims.

Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Binance Coin (BNB), Binance US Dollar (BUSD), and XRP are accepted as cryptocurrency stocks.

Binance CEO Changpong Zhao (CZ) said:

We hope that our efforts can give those affected by the disaster a sense of security. We are calling on our peers in the cryptocurrency industry to once again come together and help during this crisis.

He continued that he would like to continue to work on the community affected by the earthquake in Turkey.

The Binance Charity Foundation has made various donations in the past. In May 2020, when there was a shortage of masks in Japan due to the pandemic of the new corona, we donated masks to elderly facilities. After that, in June, in partnership with Gracone Co., Ltd., we collected funds in virtual currency to purchase masks and protective clothing to be donated to Japanese medical institutions.

What is airdrop

Free distribution of virtual currency (tokens). There are many cases where the purpose is marketing, such as raising awareness of virtual currency. Airdrops may also occur when the blockchain hard forks and a new virtual currency is born.

Also from Japan

In Japan’s first blockchain project Astar Network, a proposal was submitted to the community to use staking rewards as donations.

I wrote a proposal for the Astar charity in response to today’s massive earthquake around Turkey. Register the “Astar Charity” project on Astar’s Portal and use the staking reward for donations.

There are ambassadors and engineers in Turkey and neighboring countries, so I pray for the earliest possible recovery and safety. https://t.co/gNgZli0rcn

Local exchanges and singers also solicit donations

In Turkey, local individuals and organizations are also conducting cryptocurrency donation campaigns.

Turkish singer Haluk Levent has released a wallet address for cryptocurrency donations on Twitter. Over 260 million yen ($2 million) has been collected so far on the Ethereum, BNB and Avalanche (AVAX) blockchains.

Although Turkey has banned the use of cryptocurrencies as a means of payment for goods and services, Levent tweeted that Turkish financial authorities have approved the donation address. However, no official statement has been issued by the authorities so far, and the details are unknown.

Turkish cryptocurrency exchange Paribu also announced an action plan for disaster relief. Following meetings with relevant public institutions, it has begun collecting donations of cryptocurrencies. We are accepting Ethereum, Avalanche, Solana (SOL), stablecoins USDC, USDT, and others.

support for Ukraine

In recent years, the number of cases where virtual currency is used for donations in the event of a crisis is increasing.

As an example, in December 2022, the Stellar Development Foundation, which develops the cryptocurrency Stellar (XLM), announced a partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The company said it will distribute the stablecoin USDC on a trial basis to Ukrainians affected by the Russian invasion.
