The University of Toronto, Canada’s largest university by student population, has partnered with Ripple to support the next generation of the cryptocurrency industry. I plan to become an independent XRP Ledger validator primarily for payment processing.

Part of Ripple’s university-affiliated program

The partnership is part of Ripple’s University Blockchain Research Initiative (UBRI) in Canada. The company has already invested more than $2 million in top Canadian universities over the past five years, according to a press release.

Ripple said in a statement that the partnership “will accelerate the growth of a program that already supports significant blockchain and crypto technology research in Canada, equipping students with the technical skills for a crypto-native career.” It provides an opportunity to learn,” he said.

This is UBRI’s third partner in Canada, following the University of Waterloo and Toronto Metropolitan University.

Ripple launched UBRI in June 2018, investing over $50 million in partnerships with 17 universities around the world. Since then, it has given more than $47 million to university partners around the world, up to $80 million this year, according to a spokesperson.

Emphasis on Canada as an alternative to the US

In the United States, the crackdown on the cryptocurrency industry has tightened, and some companies are considering moving to other regions. Major cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, which was sued by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) last week, even praised Canada’s crypto regulation.

“With many crypto projects and companies looking to build operations outside the United States, we are constantly creating valuable educational opportunities,” said Eric van Miltenburg, Senior Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at Ripple. “And increasing talent development to achieve wide adoption is critical to the long-term success of the industry,” he told CoinDesk.

“Canada, especially Toronto, has some of the best business and technology universities in the world, making it a global technology hub,” Miltenberg said. We will continue to expand our presence in the region through strategic partnerships and funding with these universities to support generational leaders.”
