Celestia competitor Avail signs contract with Starkware ─ blockchain data competition intensifies | CoinDesk JAPAN

Avail, a provider of data availability solutions, has reached an agreement with top developer Starkware to play a key role in its new network starting next year. Avail competes with Celestia in the race to provide data solutions in the Ethereum blockchain ecosystem.

Provides data availability for Madara-based chains

Under the deal, which was revealed on the 20th, Avail will provide “data availability” solutions for new application chains built using Starkware’s Madara distributed sequencer. Starkware is the lead developer of StarkNet, the Ethereum ecosystem’s primary layer 2 blockchain.

The sequencer is a key component of the Layer 2 network that aggregates transactions from users and passes them onto the main Ethereum blockchain.

Avail, which is still in the testnet stage, is scheduled to move to mainnet in the first quarter of next year, while Madara is scheduled to go live in the second quarter.

Important for modular blockchains

Data availability solutions are gaining wider trust within the Ethereum ecosystem as they are designed to significantly reduce the cost of new layer 2 networks that generate large amounts of transactional data. These systems are at the heart of the industry’s move toward “modular” blockchains, with developers moving away from a one-size-fits-all approach to an a la carte model in which individual components can be connected to perform different functions. .

According to Starkware, Madara’s Sequencer enables the creation of “app chains,” which are customizable application chains, and even “layer 3” blockchains. AppChain allows those building new small networks to choose their own components and features rather than relying on existing networks with properties already set.

“Madara offers developers a wide range of data availability schemes to choose from,” the developer said in a July blog post.

Competing with Celestia

Celestia, Avail’s main competitor, went mainnet in October and has since signed a deal to make its data availability solution available to Layer 2 developers Polygon and Arbitrum. It was concluded. Avail was previously part of Polygon Labs, but became independent in March.

In addition to cost savings, the team argues that speed could provide additional benefits. Using Avail’s data availability layer, Madara’s rollup will be able to reach finality in about a minute, according to a press release seen by CoinDesk.

“Our shared interest in enabling scalable, decentralized, and affordable data availability led us to create the Data Availability Interface,” Avail founder Anurag Arjun said in an email to CoinDesk. “We worked very closely with both the Starkware and Madara teams developing it.”

In July, Avail released a data authentication bridge on testnet aimed at helping secure data off-chain.
