Combined crypto donations to Ukraine war relief efforts surpass $38M

Combined channels, including the government and private organizations, have now received more than $38 million in cryptocurrency donations, the latest estimates have suggested.

The Ukrainian government, which posted addresses of two crypto wallets asking for donations in Bitcoin, Ether, and Tether on Saturday, has now received more than $12 million from contributors. Blockchain analytics firm Elliptic revealed a single contributor giving away $1.86 million to a wallet address tied with the Ukrainian government.

Cryptocurrency exchange Binance today announced that it will donate $10 million to Ukraine amid the Russian invasion. The exchange said in the announcement:

“The donation will be split between major intergovernmental organizations and nonprofit organizations already on the ground, including UNICEF, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, iSans, and People in Need, to help support displaced children and families in Ukraine and its neighboring countries.”

Binance has also created a crypto-first crowdfunding site that has seen $5.9 million in donations, at the time of writing. Apart from major players, NGOs and private foundations are also garnering contributions from people.

UkraineDAO is a decentralized autonomous organization co-founded by Pussy Riot co-founder Nadezda Tololonnikova, members of the investment group PleasrDAO, and NFT studio Trippy Labs. It has raised nearly $3.5 million from 2062 contributors in a joint bid for an NFT of the Ukrainian flag.

In addition, the Ukrainian NGO Come Back Alive has received 181 BTC (US$7 million). The NGO used to receive donations in fiat currencies as well, but its Patreon account was suspended by the platform last week. Patreon said it “does not allow any campaigns involved in violence or purchasing of military equipment.”
