MetaMask Partners Targeted

ConsenSys, a blockchain software technology company, reported on the 14th that an external provider of customer support services for the crypto asset (virtual currency) wallet “MetaMask” was attacked.

However, the company stresses that the security of MetaMask’s browser extension and mobile app has not been affected and remains safe to use.

The attack may have occurred between August 1, 2021 and February 10, 2023, and affected approximately 7,000 MetaMask users who submitted their email addresses to customer support.

The fraudsters allegedly accessed a third-party computer system used to process customer requests and viewed support tickets submitted by MetaMask users.

Since these tickets obtained an e-mail address for reply, it warns that there is a risk of exposure to threats such as phishing e-mails. Affected users are advised to be vigilant and report any suspicious communications immediately.

After data collection and initial investigation, ConsenSys reported to the Irish Data Protection Commission and the UK Information Commissioner’s Office. We have also stopped unauthorized access and confirmed that the threat is not continuing.

Support tickets also have “free text fields” where some users may have submitted personal information. ConsenSye said that MetaMask does not ask for personally identifiable information in conversations with customers, but some users may have provided “economic and financial information, name, surname, date of birth, phone number, address,” etc. says it has the potential.
