To expand the provision of zkEVM

ConsenSys, a US software company for cryptocurrency Ethereum (ETH), announced on the 3rd that it will launch a public testnet for zkEVM on the 28th of this month.

zkEVM is an L2 solution that is compatible and equivalent to Ethereum’s virtual machine (EVM). The company had launched a private beta testnet for zkEVM last year. The private beta version has been used by many dApps (decentralized apps) and has processed over 490,000 transactions so far. We are getting a positive response from early users and will expand the testnet offering.

As ConsenSys joins other @ethereum builders this week in Denver, we’re excited to connect with developers and explore the possibilities of a highly-scalable Ethereum.🚀

zkEVM, which has high functionality but has been said to be difficult to realize, currently has no project that has launched its mainnet to the general public. On the other hand, multiple projects such as Polygon (MATIC), zkSync, and Scroll have launched mainnets and testnets with limited usage, and the technology is approaching full-scale realization.

ConsenSys’ development goals for zkEVM are to provide a seamless experience for developers in addition to increasing scalability. Tools such as the company’s product Metamask are compatible from the beginning, allowing developers to focus on their core work.

In this announcement, the company listed three features of its zkEVM.

  • Zero Migration Cost: You can migrate your apps to L2 without changing code or rewriting smart contracts.
  • Easy to use: Out-of-the-box support for tools such as Metamask and Infura.
  • Best-in-class performance: Introduces innovative proof technology that has been in development for four years.

Ganesh Swami, co-founder of blockchain data infrastructure services company Covalent, who is collaborating on the development of zkEVM, commented on this announcement as follows:

In the blockchain industry, zkEVM was thought to be years away.

But with the launch of ConsenSys, the future is getting closer.

Development status of zkEVM

zkEVM is an L2 solution that utilizes a technology called ZK rollup. There are two types of rollup technology, ZK rollup and Optimistic Rollup, each with advantages and disadvantages, but one of the disadvantages of ZK rollup is that it is not compatible with EVM. rice field.

What is rollup

A scaling solution that reduces network congestion by processing some transactions off-chain (outside the blockchain) while leveraging the security of the main blockchain.

As Mr. Swami commented above, the realization of zkEVM was thought to be years away, but the technology has developed. Last month, each project made the following announcements about zkEVM.

  • Polygon: mainnet beta launch on March 27th.
  • zkSync: Pre-registered projects are now available on the mainnet.
  • Scroll: Launched on the Goerli testnet.

According to cryptocurrency media CoinDesk, Nicolas Liochon, head of research and development at ConsenSys, said his company’s zkEVM “should be able to finish the testing phase by the end of 2023.”
