The grant program “Worldcoin Tech Tree” was announced by the non-profit Worldcoin Foundation, which is leading the direction of Worldcoin. “To become part of the global digital infrastructure, Worldcoin must be as robust, pervasive, and neutral as the Internet itself.”

Specifically, a $5 million Worldcoin (WLD) grant will be provided to developers. This grant can be used as an open-ended grant.

Orb manufacturing decentralization, etc.

“One of the most attractive items in the grant program is to become a second manufacturer of orbs and spin up an entire factory,” Worldcoin’s head of blockchain, Remko Bromen, told The Block. That’s it,” he said.

The Orb is a sphere-like device that uses OpenAI’s algorithm technology to scan the iris of the user’s eye to identify the user and generate a unique ID (World ID). Users with this World ID can periodically request free distribution of WLD in the World app.

Worldcoin also mentioned the project’s decentralization goal when announcing the grant program, stating, “We want to achieve the robustness of decentralization like TCP/IP, WiFi, and English.” He indicated that the three areas he will focus on to achieve this are decentralizing orb production through independent teams, new forms of decentralized governance, and balancing the need for decentralized robustness and privacy.
