David Beckham is one of the world’s most popular athletes with over 138 million followers on Instagram. The footballer-turned-entrepreneur, Beckham is decorated with the Order of the British Empire and has been a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF for the last 20 years.
According to the press release issued Thursday, DigitalBits plans to leverage the athlete’s popularity, including his partnerships with renowned brands Adidas, Maserati, Tudor, Sands, Diageo, and EA, for the company’s future projects. Beckham said:
“The moment I spoke with Al and the DigitalBits team, I knew that this was a major opportunity to create new experiences for my fans online. I have always taken pride in working with the best teams and I am so excited to work on my NFT collections and more innovations in the future.”
Sports organizations and clubs are increasingly looking to enter the metaverse. More recently, French football club Paris Saint-Germain filed a series of trademark applications to offer several NFT and metaverse-related products, such as virtual trading cards and memorabilia. Earlier this month, Barcelona FC also announced its intention to launch its own cryptocurrency and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
