Disney accelerates theme-park metaverse plans with “virtual-world simulator” patent

Disney has stepped up its theme-park metaverse plans after securing a patent for technology that lets users create personalized experiences of theme parks without the need for headsets, goggles, or smartphones.

As per the patent registered with the US Patent office, the “virtual-world simulator” would track the visitors using their smartphones and project 3D images and virtual effects on physical spaces located near the visitors. Unlike other platforms, Disney’s new technology would not require AR/VR headsets to experience the metaverse.

In addition, the immersive tech would offer personalized 3D images for each individual. The images would change accordingly, using a technique called Simultaneous Localization and Mapping, or SLAM.

Reasoning the motive behind the patent, Disney said in the filing that “AR glasses, goggles, and headsets can be costly and inconvenient to wear.” It noted:

“In addition, the increased concern over the spread of communicable disease will likely mandate burdensome sanitation procedures in usage environments in which wearable AR viewing equipment is shared by multiple users. Furthermore, requiring the use of an AR enabled personal device to enjoy a virtual environment effectively precludes multiple users from sharing the same experience.”

While the US Patent office approved the patent on December 28, 2021, it was filed months back to the United States Patent and Trademark Office in July 2020.

Meanwhile, the media conglomerate currently has no plans to use the simulator, according to a report by The LA Times. A spokesperson told the media outlet that Disney “files hundreds of patents each year as we explore developing technologies.”
