Distributed SNS platform Nostr’s meeting “Unconference” to be held in Tokyo

It turned out that a community event on the decentralized SNS protocol Nostr, “Nostr Unconference”, will be held in Tokyo in November 2023.

Alex McShane, director of Nostr Unconference, announced the information on the decentralized social media app Damus on the 5th. McShane is the program director of overseas Bitcoin media Bitcoin Magazine.

Nostr is a protocol that allows secure exchange of encrypted and signed messages between users on a decentralized network and serves as a data layer for building various applications.

Nostr has launched apps such as Damus, which has Twitter-like posting and following features, and Anima, which has Telegram-like chat and group features. These apps do not have a central administrator, their development plans and source code are open to the public, and they are operated by the entire community.

Nostr has been developed without external funding support since 2020, but in December 2022, Twitter founder Jack Dorsey announced that 14 BTC (equivalent to 33 million yen) will be invested by Nostr developers. He revealed that he donated to Mr. fiatjaf. Dorsey called Nostr “a great problem and solution.”

It is not clear why Dorsey supported fiatjaf, but it is likely that he sympathized with Nostr’s vision and technology.

fiatjaf is also known for his significant contributions to the Bitcoin-related projects Lightning Network and Lightning Address.

Dorsey has called Bitcoin “the native currency of the internet” and has professed that it would make the world more open and free. Through his own business and personal activities, he has contributed to the spread and development of Bitcoin.

The Nostr Unconference is an event where Nostr developers and users gather offline and online to discuss the current state and future of Nostr. Participation and meals are free, and since the first event was held in March 2022, it has been held three times. Some of the scenes are archived on YouTube.

Jack Dorsey will provide funding for Nostr Unconference’s Tokyo event, according to information McShane published on Damus. The outline of the Tokyo event is as follows.

• Expected capacity: 500-1000 people
• Candidates: Park Hyatt, Prince Park Tower, Ryogoku Kokugikan, Nippon Budokan, etc.

• Participation fee: Travel and accommodation expenses only
• Contents: Exchanges between participants, activities to give back to the local community (activities to support local schools, Bitcoin financial literacy workshops, food distribution in cooperation with Second Harvest Japan, etc.)
