E-commerce giant eBay may add cryptocurrency payments soon

American multinational e-commerce eBay is on course to become an adopter of cryptocurrencies as means of payment for its online platform, CEO of eBay Jamie Iannone revealed the company’s intention in an interview with The Street on February 27.

“We’re just completing our transition to manage payments where we’re now managing $85 billion of volume on our platform directly,” Iannone said in the interview. “This gives us the ability to open up new forms of payment.”

According to Iannone, the company is looking to dig deeper into attracting a more Gen-Z audience to its platform. When asked in the interview if he would add cryptocurrencies as one of its payments option, the CEO responded:

“We’re not accepting crypto currently on March 10, we’re going to go deeper on all of these things, payments, advertising, our focus categories.”

Not totally oblivious to the growing industry, eBay changed its policy last year to enable trading of digital commodities and NFTs as well. “eBay will be the place where people trade goods, whether they be physical or digital. So over time, you know, we want this to be the marketplace for sustainability.” Iannone noted.
