Ethereum co-founder Buterin proposes simplifying consensus building

Ethereum challenges

On the 27th, Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of the crypto asset (virtual currency) Ethereum, made a proposal to simplify Ethereum’s consensus building mechanism “Proof of Stake (PoS).”

Buterin pointed out that the Ethereum network currently has a large number of validators that verify blocks, which is good from a decentralization perspective, but it is extremely burdensome to process signatures. This time, we are proposing a solution to this problem.

A PoS simplification proposal: make a design that only requires 8192 signatures per slot (even with SSF), making the consensus implementation considerably simpler and lighter.https://t.co/Z8mK7vZx7g

What is PoS?

A consensus algorithm that gives you the right to approve and create new blocks depending on the percentage of virtual currency you own (stake).

The solution to the problem is to limit the number of signatures required per slot to 8,192. A slot in Ethereum is a 12-second block of blockchain formation during which one validator submits a new block. Buterin noted that on the day he wrote his proposal, it was processing up to 28,000 signatures per slot.

If implemented, these changes would make consensus building much simpler and the network much lighter.

Approach to achieve this

Mr. Buterin proposed three approaches to realize this proposal.

The first is to increase the amount of Ethereum required to become a validator and set a limit for validators. The second is to divide the stakers into two groups: those who stake 4,096 ETH (equivalent to 1.3 billion yen) and those who do not set a minimum stake amount, and divide the roles. The third step is to change the method for selecting validators for each slot.

Buterin suggests that you now decide which approach is best for you, or whether you want to do something completely different. He said reducing the number of signatures required per slot to 8,192 would simplify the implementation of the technology and benefit those building the infrastructure.
