Ethereum Conducts Mainnet Shadow Fork Ahead of Shanghai Upgrade

Ethereum testing continues

On the 23rd, the crypto asset (virtual currency) Ethereum (ETH) implemented a shadow fork of the main net for the next upgrade “Shanghai”.

A problem was confirmed with the client “Geth” after the implementation, but it was fixed immediately. After that, we will continue to test, such as intentionally running a problematic node. The implementation target for Shanghai is March this year, and Ethereum’s official website states that it will be implemented by June 2023.

Withdrawal-Mainnet-Shadow-Fork-1 is finalizing 🚀🚀🚀

It started out with a few issues because the config wasn’t correctly applied on geth (we disallow overriding the mainnet config).

What is a client

An Ethereum client is software that implements the Ethereum specification and allows you to communicate over a P2P network. Clients allow nodes to participate in the Ethereum network.

Multiple clients have been developed for Ethereum to ensure that there is no single point of failure, but each client can interoperate.

A shadow fork is a test for development. This time, we are testing in an environment in which the Ethereum mainnet is forked. Ethereum developers have been conducting shadow fork tests for Shanghai for some time. It was announced last week that a new shadow fork would take place on the 23rd.

Ethereum developer Marius Van Der Wijden reported on the 23rd that the shadow fork block was correctly finalized. The shadow fork appears to be dedicated to testing staked Ethereum withdrawal functionality.

Currently, Ethereum can be staked but not withdrawn yet, and Shanghai is planning to implement a function to withdraw staked Ethereum.

Publish withdrawal FAQ

Ethereum protocol support Tim Beiko announced on the 21st that he has released an FAQ regarding staked Ethereum withdrawals. The FAQ covers almost everything related to withdrawals.

The FAQ also includes basic content such as “Shanghai is the name of the fork of the execution layer, and the name of the upgrade of the consensus layer is Capella.” In addition, it also stated that “the process for withdrawing money and ending the validator operation differs depending on the client.”

Among investors, there are concerns that the implementation of the withdrawal function will put Ethereum into selling pressure, but there is also a positive view that the ability to withdraw will attract new staking participants.
