Dencun test schedule
On the 24th, the Ethereum Foundation announced the test schedule for the next upgrade of the crypto asset (virtual currency) Ethereum (ETH), “Dencun.”
Before upgrading the mainnet, we will be running Dencun on two testnets, Sepolia and Holesky, as planned. Sepolia is scheduled to run on January 30th and Holesky on February 7th. If these testnets run smoothly, the company plans to move on to the mainnet, but does not specify when that will happen.
Dencun, which will implement a notable feature called “Proto-Danksharding,” will be implemented on three testnets before running on Ethereum’s mainnet.
Initially already implemented on the Goerli testnet earlier this month, the Ethereum Foundation announced today that proto-dunk sharding functionality is now available on Goerli.
The Ethereum Foundation previously stated that it would not move to the next testnet if there were major issues with Goerli, so it appears that the current testing is progressing smoothly.
Additionally, it has been voiced that it is difficult to accurately predict the implementation date on the main network, as there is a possibility that problems may occur in the future. As it depends on the testing situation, there are various predictions for when Dencun will be available on the main network, including “late February or early March,” “March at the earliest,” and “1Q of this year (January to March).”
About Proto Dunk Sharding
Proto-dunk sharding, which is attracting attention from investors and users, is a feature that can reduce data transfer costs from layer 2 (L2) to layer 1 (L1), resulting in lower L2 transaction fees. It is.
It has been pointed out that Ethereum’s L2 still has high transaction fees compared to other L1 chains such as Solana (SOL). Whether L2 fees reach levels like Solana with the implementation of proto-dunk sharding is a key focus regarding Ethereum’s competitiveness and market position.

In addition, the impact of proto-dunk sharding on the supply of Ethereum has recently received increasing attention. Some say the actual impact is limited, but since this is an important point going forward, we significantly updated Dencun’s article below yesterday to include the supply amount.

What is layer 2?
The “second layer” network. In the case of Ethereum, Ethereum is L1, and networks such as Optimism (OP) and Arbitrum (ARB) are L2.
Processing all transactions on the L1 chain would increase the load, leading to a decrease in processing speed and a rise in network fees. By performing some transactions on L2, it is expected that the load on the main chain will be reduced and processing speed will be improved.
