Ethereum L2 “Scroll” Launches zkEVM on Goerli Testnet

Develop a secure L2 solution

Crypto asset (virtual currency) Ethereum (ETH) L2 project “Scroll” announced on the 27th that it has launched its own solution of “zkEVM” on the Goerli testnet.

We will continue to test and improve performance over the next few months. This “Alpha Testnet” is the last test before the mainnet launch.

Scroll launched its last Pre-Alpha testnet in August 2022. So far, it has been supported by over 100,000 users and processed over 15.4 million transactions. He has generated and submitted proofs for 1.8 million blocks.

Alpha testnet is a permissionless testnet. Anyone can participate in the test, even though Goerli has made it harder to obtain test tokens.

Race to develop zkEVM

zkEVM is an L2 solution that utilizes a technology called ZK rollup. In addition, it has compatibility and equivalence with Ethereum’s virtual machine (EVM). Although ZK Rollup has excellent technology, it has been difficult to make it compatible with EVM, but multiple projects such as Scroll have been working to realize the technology.

What is ZK Rollup

A rollup technology that introduces zero-knowledge proofs. Rollup refers to a scaling solution that leverages the security of the main blockchain while processing some transactions off-chain (outside the blockchain) to reduce network congestion.

In this announcement, Scroll explains that it has valued the following points in its development so far.

  • Be community driven
  • Think long-term
  • Taking care of Ethereum values

In the second long-term perspective item, he pointed out that “zkEVM is one of the most complex systems in the blockchain area.” He explained that from a long-term perspective, it is essential to build the system safely so that it can be used with peace of mind.

In the development of zkEVM, Polygon (MATIC) announced on the 14th that the beta version of the mainnet will be launched on March 27th. zkSync has also launched its zkEVM mainnet, although it is not yet available to the public.

As a name, Scroll is still in the “testnet” stage. It’s behind other projects in development, but Scroll co-founder Sandy Peng told GM Radio Thursday that a slight delay in launch time isn’t a problem.

Even when other projects are leading the way in development, Scroll follows their own ideas and does not force themselves to be number one, working to build a secure network.
