Starknet Roadmap
The crypto asset (virtual currency) Ethereum (ETH) L2 network “Starknet” announced its development plan for 2023 on the 25th.
Starknet’s current model “V.11” and subsequent version upgrades “~V.15” focus on improving performance and user experience (UX). This is to support the growing number of users and developers that are expected to grow over the coming months.
For performance, the emphasis is on improving throughput (data transfer speed), latency (response time), and transaction costs. The main points of the roadmap are as follows.
- Performance improvements: Starknet v0.12.0 offers significant throughput and latency improvements with its Rust (programming language)-based sequencer and Rust-Cairo VM.
- Reduction of transaction costs: Starknet v0.11.0, which was implemented on the mainnet at the end of March, introduced a new programming language “Cairo 1.0”. By compressing the data and changing the hash function, gas prices have become about five times cheaper. Starknet v0.13.0 implements a hybrid solution “Volition” that selects on-chain or off-chain data storage locations. Significantly reduce L1 (Ethereum) data costs by reducing the data volume of proof of validity.
- Faster finality: Introducing a fee market in v0.14.0, shortening and fixing block intervals in v0.15.0 to provide a better user experience.

In particular, v0.13.0 (implementation of Volition) will be implemented in conjunction with Ethereum’s EIP-4844 “Proto-Danksharding” scheduled for Q4 2023.

Starknet claims that “Volition and EIP-4844 are expected to significantly reduce transaction costs, attract more developers and applications to Starknet, and accelerate network adoption.”
By the end of 2023 Starknet aims to have a stable base layer in terms of functionality, performance and UX. In 2024, decentralization will be the focus, both in operations and decision-making.
Starknet also plans to fully migrate from Cairo 0 to Cairo 1.0 sometime in 2023, with a major upgrade “Regenesis” ending Cairo 0. The upgrade is planned as a seamless event with no impact on network conditions or downtime.
Regenesis is shutting down Cairo 0, so it will only happen after the bulk of the community has been able to complete this transition. Regenesis will be the last major upgrade centrally scheduled on Starknet’s roadmap. From then on, it will be determined by governance decisions.
