Improving functions and scalability
Crypto asset (virtual currency) Ethereum (ETH) L2 “zkSync” announced on the 17th that a new proof system “Boojum” for “zkSync Era” has started operation on the main net.
The purpose of developing Boojum is to improve the scalability of the current proof system and increase the distribution of the network. It has already launched on the mainnet but has not fully migrated, it is running alongside existing systems and is still in the testing phase.
Say hello to Boojum : zkSync Era’s new high-performance proof system for radical decentralization. Boojum is an upgrade that will transition zkSync Era to a STARK-powered proof system, providing world-class performance on consumer-grade hardware.

What is L2
Abbreviation for “Layer 2”, which is the “second layer” of the network. Processing all transactions on the main chain would increase the load, leading to slower processing speeds and higher network fees. By performing part of the transaction in L2, we can expect to reduce the load on the main chain and improve the processing speed.

zkSync’s mission is to promote personal freedom. To achieve this mission, we are leveraging blockchain to enable everyone to claim digital ownership.
The zkSync team explained that the blockchain used at this time must be trustless, secure, highly scalable, and free-for-all. Boojum will play an important role in achieving this mission.

Overview of Boojum
Specifically Boojum to improve network performance. The current proof system is highly efficient, but the zkSync team points out that if many chains operate as “Hyperchains” at L3 in the future, they will not be able to process transactions. Boojum helps improve processing power.

Another major role is promoting decentralization. The introduction of Boojum will lower the barriers to entry and increase the decentralization of the network by enabling consumer-level computers to create proofs. The Boojum network will be open to computers with 16GB (gigabytes) of GPU RAM, the company said.
According to “Decrypt”, Alex Gluchowski, CEO of Matter Labs, which develops zkSync, seems to have explained that “Even 8GB can create proofs.” Gluchowski noted that competing projects’ networks typically require more than 500GB for certification. He also explains that the 8GB level is the same level as gaming computers.
This announcement is the first in a series of announcements. zkSync said it will share further testing progress and performance details in the future.
