Build a free economic zone with Ethereum

The crypto asset (virtual currency) Ethereum (ETH) L2 project “zkSync” announced on the 24th that the alpha version of the scaling solution “zkSync Era” has been released to all users.

zkSync’s mission is to “accelerate the spread of virtual currency for personal sovereignty”. In addition to running zkSync Era to support Ethereum processing, it will also create a free economy without the need for trust or barriers.

The zkSync Era, which has been launched in stages, was previously called “zkSync2.0.” When zkSync2.0 was released only to pre-registered projects in February this year, the name was changed to zkSync Era.

It’s been over a month since then, and zkSync Era is available to all users, but it’s still in alpha. As the number of users increases, we will check whether there are any delays in withdrawals and whether there are any vulnerabilities.

On the other hand, about 490 million yen ($3.8 million) has been spent so far to keep zkSync Era running safely. We’ve done some network testing, multiple security audits, and a bug bounty.

Features of zkSync Era

zkSync Era is an L2 solution classified as “zkEVM” compatible with Ethereum’s virtual machine (EVM). It utilizes the rollup technology “ZK Rollup” that introduces zero-knowledge proof.

What is rollup

A scaling solution that reduces network congestion by processing some transactions off-chain (outside the blockchain) while leveraging the security of the main blockchain.

One of the major features is that it supports “Account Abstraction (AA)” from the beginning. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin previously said, “Implementing AA is a long-standing dream of the Ethereum developer community.”

By supporting AA from the beginning, all accounts created on zkSync Era will be able to pay fees with ERC-20 tokens other than Ethereum and have gas bills shouldered.

It was also revealed earlier this month that AA was also implemented on Ethereum. Developers can use AA to build applications.

zkEVM, which is attracting attention as an L2 solution for Ethereum, has also developed projects such as Polygon (MATIC), ConsenSys, and Scroll. All projects have progressed toward full-fledged commercialization.

Issuance of original tokens

According to the cryptocurrency media “The Block”, zkSync Era has no clear plans to issue its own token at this time. Alex Gluchowski, CEO of Matter Labs, the developer of zkSync, reportedly said, “We don’t need tokens at this point.”

The reason we don’t need tokens right now is that most of our operations are centralized. In alpha, Matter Labs will upgrade the code on its own and manage roles such as sequencers and provers. Gluchowski said tokens will be needed when the sequencer is decentralized.

He also revealed that prominent DeFi (decentralized finance) projects such as Uniswap, Curve, Balancer, Maker and SushiSwap use zkSync Era.
