Ethereum L2 “zkSync”, zkEVM mainnet now available to developers

Cryptocurrency (virtual currency) Ethereum (ETH) L2 “zkSync” announced on the 16th that the mainnet of “zkEVM”, which is currently under development, has reached the “Fair Onboarding Alpha” stage.

It was also announced that the name of this solution, which had been called “zkSync2.0” until now, will be rebranded to “zkSync Era” in the future. Having reached Fair Onboarding Alpha, pre-registered projects are now able to deploy their applications on zkSync Era.

They also announced that they have made the code completely open source. Now anyone can see the code, copy it and use it. However, the protocol is in its early stages, and code copying is not recommended yet.

In the Fair Onboarding Alpha, zkSync Era is not yet accessible to end users. The mainnet launch, which has been progressing in stages so far, is scheduled for “Full Launch Alpha” next. It’s now available to all projects and end-users, and we recommend waiting until now to copy the code.

zkSync’s mission is “to popularize virtual currency for the general public for individual independence”. To accomplish this mission, we will create technology that many developers and users will want to use, and expand Ethereum while maintaining its high-value attributes.

In order to continue to look ahead to the future and target people who are unfamiliar with virtual currency, this time we have adopted the name “era”, which represents the stage of popularization. This rebranding also includes the meaning of “to a new era of Ethereum”. In line with this, “zkSync1.0” will be called “zkSync Lite”.

The next step at this point is Full Launch Alpha, but the zkSync team is currently working on an updated roadmap and will announce the next milestone at a later time.

What is zkEVM

As you can see from the roadmap in the image above, zkSync Era reached the “Baby Alpha” stage in October last year. About four months later, we arrived at Fair Onboarding Alpha. He explained that many tests and audits have been repeated so far.

zkSync Era is a solution classified as “zkEVM”, for which development competition is intensifying. zkEVM is a solution that has compatibility and equivalence with Ethereum’s virtual machine (EVM) using a technology called ZK Rollup.

This week, Polygon (MATIC) also announced on the 14th that it will launch the mainnet beta version of “Polygon zkEVM” on March 27th. Other projects such as ConsenSys and Scroll are working on zkEVM.
