Ethereum Name Service lays off Brantly Millegan over controversial tweets

The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) community has voted out the now former DAO Steward and Director of Operations, Brantly Millegan after one of his 2016 controversial tweets resurfaced.

The decision to terminate Millegan from his roles took over the weekend after his tweet, which expressed controversial opinions on LGBTQ, persons, transgenderism, abortion, and more, went viral in the community.

Ethereum Name Service is a blockchain protocol that offers Web3 and decentralized naming for wallets, websites, and more. Buying a domain name on ENS lets users map their wallet addresses and decentralized websites to a single unique name.

According to a blog post released Sunday, 75% of the community stewards called for the removal of Millegan from his position after he continued to defend these views in a publicly held Twitter space on Saturday.

“Propagating rhetoric that is viewed as hateful and discriminatory is not conduct conducive to the role as a Community Steward. This conduct will not be tolerated despite one’s contributions to the protocol,” the blog post noted.

Nick Johnson, the lead developer behind ENS, confirmed the news today in a Twitter thread. He noted:

“Many of you were hurt by Brantly’s comments over the past 24 hours, and we strongly believe that ENS should be an inclusive community. Going forward we’ll continue to do everything we can to ensure that remains the case.”

Brantly has been a valued team member of TNL for the past three years. However, as a team we felt that his position with TNL is no longer tenable.
