Goerli, the third and final Ethereum testnet, has switched to the PoS (proof-of-stake) consensus. This means that Ethereum is now very close to the “Merge”, the event wherein its mainnet will too become a fully proof-of-stake platform.
This follows the Ropsten and Sepolio tesnet PoS transitions, which went through in June and July, respectively. Ethereum blockchain developers have, thus, successfully tested their applications and are ready to transfer their work to the mainnet itself.
It is expected that the Merge will finally go through on September 19. After it switches to the PoS mechanism, this will improve the network’s scalability. Moreover, by eliminating the current ETH mining procedure, Ethereum will become almost 100% more environmental-friendly.
After the Goerli transition, the value of ETH increased some 15%, according to CoinMarketCap. It’s currently trading at $1,883.
