The developers of the Ethereum blockchain just launched a successful upgrade, “Shapella,” in April that allowed them to withdraw staked Ethereum (ETH). But it’s already preparing for the next big upgrade. It’s “Dencun”.

The name “Denkun” is a combination of the names of the simultaneous upgrades on the two main layers. The execution layer will have the upgrade “Cancun” and the consensus layer will have the upgrade “Deneb”.

The previous upgrade, Chapela, was likewise a combination of two upgrades, Shanghai and Capella.

Proto dunk sharding

At the heart of Denkun is Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 4844, known as proto-danksharding. EIP4844 aims to scale the Ethereum blockchain by providing more space for temporarily storing data. It is also expected to reduce the fees for rollup, which is a layer 2 solution.

When running the last upgrade, Chapera, the developers decided that EIP4844 was too big a task to include in Chapera, and decided to defer it to the next upgrade.

Details in the coming weeks

At the official online meeting on May 11th, the developers delved into the technical details of EIP 4844.

Tim Beiko, protocol support leader for the Ethereum Foundation, said at the beginning of the conference, “By default, we believe this scope will be included in Cancun. Going forward, anyone who wants to change it should put it on their agenda. (“Denkun” is not yet common, and developers sometimes simply call it “Kankun”).

There was no discussion on the timing of the Denkun upgrade on Thursday, although in the past it had been targeted for the second half of 2023. Denkun will include EIP4844 as well as EIP6780, 6475 and 1153.

What kind of update will Denkun be? The full picture is expected to be finalized in the coming weeks. Developers are testing to decide which other EIPs to include in Denkun.
