Users of the popular social media platform Instagram may soon see the platform integrating NFT features, as revealed by Mark Zuckerberg on Tuesday. The CEO of Instagram’s parent company Meta mentioned the “near term” plans at the SXSW conference held in Austin, Texas on March 15.

“I’m not ready to kind of announce exactly what that’s going to be today. But over the next several months, the ability to bring some of your NFTs in, hopefully over time be able to mint things within that environment,” the tech CEO said while not divulging much into the subject.

NFT enthusiasts have been following the development since December last year after Instagram’s chief executive Adam Mosseri revealed in an Instagram story that his team is “actively exploring NFTs.” “I think it’s an interesting place that we can play and also to hopefully help creators,” Mosseri said at the time.

Zuckerberg also acknowledged the growing acceptance and popularity of NFTs and explained what it means for the company’s metaverse plans. He noted:

“I would hope that you know, the clothing that your avatar is wearing in the metaverse, you know, can be basically minted as an NFT and you can take it between your different places. There’s like a bunch of technical things that need to get worked out before that’ll really be seamless to happen.”

Instagram’s parent company changed its name from Facebook to Meta last September signaling its business shift towards the metaverse industry.
