Following the heels of payments giant American Express, rival Mastercard has filed for 15 metaverse and NFT trademark applications with the US with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on April 4.

The trademark filings were disclosed by trademark attorney Mike Kondoudis, who revealed the applications were related to NFT collectibles and marketplace, software for payment processing in the metaverse, as well as e-commerce transactions in the virtual world.

MasterCard has also filed to trademark its “Circles” logo and the “Priceless” slogan. In addition, it also plans to offer “events and performances in the metaverse in the fields of finance, cryptocurrencies, and NFTs.”

The payments company has been expediting its expansion in the crypto industry for quite some time now. It recently partnered with Ethereum software company ConsenSys to help launch a scaling solution that offers ‘enterprise-grade scalability’ to financial institutions. Mastercard also backed ConsenSys in its $65 million funding round in April.

The suite of applications followed the ones filed by American Express earlier last month. It seeks to file for trademarks related to cryptocurrency trading services, tokens and NFT, an online marketplace for NFTs, travel agency services, and entertainment services in the virtual world.
