Tech conglomerate Meta (formerly Facebook) has submitted eight trademark applications related to metaverse and Web3 with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Suggesting massive expansion plans, the applications filed on March 18 encompassed trademarks related to blockchain software, virtual reality wearables, digital currency exchanges, entertainment services, dating, and social networking products, advertising services, and more.

One of the applications also seeks to trademark Meta’s logo for several new products and services related to virtual currencies, crypto and NFT trading services, and more. The trademark filings were revealed by licensed trademark attorney Michael Kondoudis on Wednesday.

Speaking in an interview with Bloomberg, Kondoudis noted:

“The goods and services of those applications extended far beyond just the run of the mill NFT and metaverse products that a lot of applications include. Only a company that has this size of scale and has a hand in the evolution and development of the metaverse can possibly plan on doing everything in these applications.”

In October 2021, Facebook rebranded its corporate entity to Meta, signaling a shift in its business strategy. According to Zuckerberg, the company plans to go beyond its business in social media and build a new strategy for the new virtual reality.

Meta follows the likes of several renowned names to file for metaverse-related trademark applications. McDonald’s, Burger King, Panda Express, Victoria’s Secret, Monster Energy, and Nike are just some examples of top brands entering the space.
