Meta to showcase metaverse-related products in first retail store

Tech conglomerate Meta has taken an ironic approach to spearhead its metaverse business.

The company announced Monday that it will open a retail physical store, the Meta Store, at the company’s campus in Burlingame, California. The store will display Meta’s hardware virtual reality and augmented reality products, including the Quest 2 virtual-reality headset, the Portal video calling device, and the Ray-Ban Stories smart sunglasses.

Ray-Ban Stories are sunglasses equipped with functions such as audio playback and image/video shooting. Developed in partnership with Ray-Ban, the store will allow customers to try out the product, but those who want them will need to order online on Ray-Ban’s website.

In addition, the company’s ‘Portal’ product will offer users to make video calls with a store employee, experience smart cameras, and more. Explaining the reasoning behind a hardware store, Martin Gilliard, head of the Meta Store, said:

“The Meta Store is going to help people make that connection to how our products can be the gateway to the metaverse in the future. We’re not selling the metaverse in our store, but hopefully, people will come in and walk out knowing a little bit more about how our products will help connect them to it.”

In addition to metaverse products, Meta is developing a metaverse as well. The company’s CTO Andrew “Boz” Bosworth recently revealed in a tweet that Meta is developing a web version of its social virtual reality Horizon Worlds platform.

When Horizon’s web version launches, the Horizon platform fee will only be 25%—a much lower rate compared to other similar world-building platforms.
