Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has laid out a new roadmap for Ethereum for the next few years, saying key goals such as Layer 2 scaling, wallet security and privacy should be pursued together. .

Layer 2 scaling

The first component, layer 2 scaling, is extremely important. Buterin said that if Ethereum fails to do so, “any product that aspires to mass market will inevitably abandon the chain and adopt centralized workarounds on all fronts.”

The Ethereum blockchain has seen massive growth in the last few months in terms of the number of Layer 2 networks, with the ZK rollup released by Polygon and Matter Labs.

Later this year, there will be a major upgrade called “Dencun,” which will include features like “proto-dunk sharding,” which aims to make rollups cheaper. .

wallet security

The second factor, wallet security, will migrate all user wallets to smart contract wallets. Buterin believes it is necessary so that users can feel secure about making crypto payments and storing their data on-chain, otherwise they will move to a centralized one. .

privacy

Buterin further noted that the third factor, privacy, is extremely important as everything a user does on-chain will be public, and if it doesn’t work, “Ethereum will fail.”

“It is not just the functionality of the protocol that needs to be improved. In some cases, it will require a fairly fundamental change in how we interact with the Ethereum blockchain, requiring deep-level changes to applications and wallets.”
