Instagram has registered the iOS version of its text-based communication app “Threads” on Apple’s App Store on the 3rd. The release is scheduled for July 6th and is currently in “pre-order” status.

Threads provides a Twitter-like public discussion platform. Users can log in with their Instagram account and follow people they already have an Instagram connection with. The official description on the App Store states:

Threads is a place for the community to come together and discuss anything from topics of interest to upcoming trends. No matter what genre you are interested in, you can follow and connect directly with your favorite creators and people with the same interests as you. Or you can grow your loyal following and share your ideas, opinions and creativity with the world.

Since last year, it has been reported frequently that Meta is developing a new service that will be a Twitter killer. “As Twitter is in crisis, Meta needs to regain its vigor,” a Meta employee wrote in an internal post, The New York Times reported in December.

Since Elon Musk acquired Twitter in October, we have implemented a large-scale restructuring in units of 1,000 people and implemented a paid subscription “Twitter Blue” for user identity verification. It’s here. It has also improved the service by changing the algorithm of the service to increase the attention of some posts and removing the moderation rule that banned certain types of tweets.

And this weekend, Twitter introduced “scraping,” which limits the number of tweets unregistered users can read. Some users have complained. Additionally, Twitter today made significant changes to TweetDeck, a tool used by many journalists and social media professionals. With this change, TweetDeck will transition to a paid service in about a month.

We have just launched a new, improved version of TweetDeck. All users can continue to access their saved searches & workflows via https://t.co/2WwL3hNVR2 by selecting “Try the new TweetDeck” in the bottom left menu.

Meanwhile, according to The Verge, Meta’s chief product officer, Chris Cox, called Threads “our way of dealing with Twitter” at an internal meeting.

Cox said the new app aims to be a safe, easy-to-use and reliable platform, providing a stable environment for creators to build and grow their audience.

There are also rumors that Threads will be integrated with ActivityPub, a decentralized social media protocol. This technical integration will allow users to bring their accounts and followers to other apps that support ActivityPub, such as Mastodon.

ActivityPub is an open protocol that makes social networks interoperable and connects them all into one social graph and content sharing system. Giving control to users and enabling them to build a social web beyond a single company.
