MapleStory adopts Polygon

Major game development company NEXON announced on the 22nd that it has entered into a partnership with Polygon Labs, which develops the blockchain for the crypto asset (virtual currency) Polygon (MATIC).

Polygon’s technology was adopted to develop the blockchain version of the company’s popular game MapleStory. The name of the newly developed game is “MapleStory Universe”. MapleStory Universe will expand the economic sphere of the game by making it possible to collect items issued as NFTs (non-fungible tokens).

Specifically, we will use “Polygon Supernets”, a solution for building chains for applications, as the foundation. Developers can leverage Polygon Supernets to create customizable, high-performance chains.

MapleStory Universe group leader Sun-young Hwang made the following comments about this partnership.

We look forward to building the MapleStory universe on Polygon, the top protocol for Web3 games, and expanding the NFT ecosystem.

This partnership is the best choice to strengthen the ecosystem.

Also, Mr. Ryan Wyatt, the head of Polygon Labs, commented as follows.

Nexon’s adoption of Polygon Supernets sends a strong message to the gaming industry about the future of blockchain gaming.

South Korea is an important market for promoting Web3 games to the general public.

Nexon was founded in South Korea in 1994. Currently headquartered in Tokyo, it distributes over 50 titles of various online games in over 190 countries.

Use cases in the gaming industry

As Mr. Hwang commented, evaluating it as “the top protocol for Web3 games,” polygon technology is being used more and more in the game industry. Last month, Square Enix’s NFT collectible art project “SYMBIOGENESIS”, a major domestic game company, announced that it would use polygon blockchains in its games.

The reasons why Nexon chose Polygon are not detailed in the announcement, but Square Enix said that they decided to introduce Polygon because of its fast processing speed, low fees, user-friendliness, and sustainability.

Also, on the 20th of this month, it was revealed that Polygon has launched a project to build a network dedicated to games together with Immutable, which also develops scaling solutions for Ethereum.

By combining Polygon’s zkEVM technology and Immutable’s Web3 game platform, they will jointly build a scaling solution “Immutable zkEVM” to promote the expansion of the use of Ethereum games.
