The core of the upgrade is that the consensus model of the Ronin network will move from the traditional proof-of-authority (PoA) to delegated PoS (DPoS).

The PoA model selected validators based on their credibility, with prominent companies such as Google Cloud, Animoca Brands, DappRadar, and Nansen playing the role.

With the move to DPoS, users will be able to choose and “delegate” to validators by staking Ronin’s native token RON. It is believed that users will be able to earn staking rewards, leading to decentralization of the network.

Also, although the hurdles to entry are high, anyone can become a validator for 250,000 RON (approximately 32.3 million yen at the time of writing).

To celebrate this upgrade and the launch of RON staking, Sky Mavis has announced five development studios that will be building games on Ronin.

  • Directive Games: Team shooting game “The Machines Arena”
  • Tribes Studio: Developing an open-world MMO “Tribe Stars”
  • Bali Games: Development of a puzzle game for smartphones
  • Bawled.io: Blockchain-based cricket game
  • SkyBu: ‘Battle Bears Heroes’ in Development

Sky Mavis aims to make Ronin a “launchpad for compelling Web3 games” by pushing development beyond Axie Infinity, which took the world by storm.

Ronin bridge hacking incident

In March of last year, Ethereum (ETH) and USDC worth more than 80 billion yen were illegally leaked from the Ronin Bridge, which connects Axie Infinity’s sidechain Ronin and Ethereum. Sky Mavis shut down the Ronin bridge after it was found to be caused by the misuse of a validator’s private key.

The U.S. Treasury Department said the North Korean hacking group Lazarus was behind the Ronin validator breach. Since the hacking incident, Sky Mavis has been focusing on strengthening Ronin’s security, and at the end of June, it had a hard fork, restarted it, and compensated the user for the full amount of damage.
