Ontario regulator reports Kraken, Coinbase CEO tweets to Canadian police

Canadian regulatory agency Ontario Securities Commission has reported the recent tweets by the CEOs of crypto exchanges Kraken and Coinbase to law enforcement bureaus, local media house the Regina Leader-Post reported Monday.

In the tweets, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong and Kraken CEO Jesse Powell can be seen criticizing the implementation of the Emergency Law aimed at suppressing the trucker protests.

Concerning to see stuff like this happening in any country, especially such an economically free place like Canada.

“Crowdfunding platforms now regulated under the Canadian Terrorist Financing Act. Do you see where this is going? Please do not fund causes directly from custodial wallets. I’m sure freeze orders are coming. Withdraw to non-custodial before sending,” Kraken CEO wrote in its tweet. Similarly, Coinbase CEO noted that he was concerned about the recent measures taken in an economically free place like Canada.

Canadian authorities, on the other hand, have taken note of the recent tweets and flagged them down to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. “We are aware of this information and have shared it with the RCMP and relevant federal authorities,” Kristen Rose, the OSC’s manager of public affairs, said in an email to Regina Leader-Post.

As part of the emergency orders, Canadian authorities required the country’s financial institutions, including cryptocurrency platforms, to monitor and suspend accounts associated with protestors. Soon after Canadian police found at least 34 crypto wallets that received funds from supporters of the ‘Freedom Convoy’ trucker protests.
