Collaboration between the Mint Bureau and NFT Art is realized
France’s La Monnaie de Paris, the world’s oldest mint, is hosting an exhibition of works by renowned NFT artist Robert Allis.
The exhibition titled “Babel” consists of the following two series newly produced by Mr. Alice at the request of the Paris Mint.
- The Blueprints
- Ornament and Crisis
Alice says many of the works in the exhibition are highly provocative, including “the history of the financial crisis in this building that has been making money for 1,200 years.” His work questions the role of centralized power and examines the impact of blockchain and cryptocurrencies on traditional institutions.
The “Blueprint” series of six works abstracts architectural drawings and original blueprints, combining the history of blockchain with existing graphics, typology and literature (“The Library of Babel” by Jorge Luis Borges). , creating imaginary structures that reflect the clash of centralized and decentralized thought systems. The prices of works range from 50,000 to 65,000 euros (about 7.8 million to 10 million yen).
The “Ornament and Crisis” series also consists of six works, presenting an alternative history of the financial crisis at the Paris Mint. The series challenges traditional architectural norms, referencing the Austrian architect Adolf Loos’s “Ornament and Crime”, which argued that “decoration is a sin”. Using a 3D scan of the neoclassical Paris Mint, the work sees traditional ornamental and architectural motifs as symbols of power in a centralized monetary system. Prices range from 7,000 euros to 50,000 euros (approximately 1.1 million to 7.8 million yen).
Despite the nature of the work, the historic Paris Mint, founded in 864, said it respected “very different points of view” and developed a strong relationship with Alice. The idea for the exhibition dates back to a year ago, but it is said that everything was left up to Mr. Alice on the condition that he would get inspiration from the Mint.
Marc Schwartz, CEO of the Paris Mint, said he had a very fruitful conversation about working with Alice.
This facility has existed for 12 centuries and we have witnessed the evolution of various forms of money. While we have gained valuable insight into the history of monetary forms, it is clear that today’s payment methods are becoming increasingly digital and dematerialized, as is art.
