This user identification service “Polygon ID” was released by Polygon in March 2022. It is a decentralized ID platform that can authenticate individuals while ensuring the anonymity of users with the technology of zero-knowledge proof (ZKP).

What is a zero-knowledge proof?

A type of proof protocol, a mechanism by which the prover proves that the claim is “truth” without disclosing any information other than “the claim is true” to the verifier.

This time, Polygon has released four open source tools. “Verifier SDK” for ID verifiers such as dApps operators, “Issuer Node” for ID issuers such as DAOs and KYC service providers, “Wallet SDK” for wallet developers, developers and It is a “Wallet App” for end users.

Polygon explained that the introduction of “Polygon ID” in these tools will enable:

  • Users can authenticate without disclosing personal information.
  • Users can generate zero-knowledge proofs using off-chain credentials (such as diplomas, driver’s licenses, etc.) to interact with smart contracts.
  • User convenience has been improved by strengthening security and using a common ID for multiple applications.
  • Developers can enforce legal compliance while maintaining user privacy.

Polygon is focused on zero-knowledge proofs, and in 2021 acquired Mir, which develops zero-knowledge proof technology, for a value of about 54.5 billion yen ($400 million).

Fields that can be utilized

Polygon explained DAO, e-commerce, passwordless login, etc. as specific adoption destinations.

First, in DAOs, members may wish to participate in governance online and anonymously. In such a case, by using the tool “Polygon ID”, it is possible to confirm the participation eligibility without revealing the identity of the member.

Next, for e-commerce user registration, Polygon ID enables businesses to reduce the cost of storing customer and payment data, while increasing payment security.

As for logins, Internet users have passwords for many services, but they are difficult to manage and secure. Passwordless login with Polygon ID enables encrypted authentication by simply scanning a QR code or connecting to a desktop wallet.

In addition, it will be possible to perform risk assessment and ID authentication of borrowers in the lending service, save user information (avatars, assets, progress, etc.) of online games and take over to other games. there is
