Porygon planning another upgrade to fix the reorg problem

Deep reorg occurs in polygons

On the 22nd, a reorganization (reorganization) of 157 blocks occurred in the blockchain of the crypto asset (virtual currency) Polygon (MATIC).

A reorganization (reorg) is a chain divergence that occurs when two blocks are mined (generated) at the same time in a decentralized blockchain network. The longer chain in terms of number of subsequent blocks is considered normal and the other chain is deleted.

This leads to adverse effects such as degraded user experience such as transaction delays and uncertainties, and increased node costs. Reorganizations of 1-2 blocks generally occur frequently in blockchains, but the longer the reorganization lasts, the greater the impact on the network.

In Polygon, a 120-block reorg occurred on December 12, 2022, and an upgrade was implemented on January 17, 2011 at the suggestion of a Polygon Lab developer.

In this upgrade, for the purpose of suppressing reorganization (reorg) with a large number of blocks (deep), the time that a single validator can generate blocks is changed from 128 seconds to 32 seconds, and until finality is reached as a network Reduced the number of blocks (sprint size) from the current 64 blocks to 16 blocks.

The 157-block reorg on the 22nd prompted Polygon Ecosystem developers to take more action. Hayden Adams, founder of Uniswap, the leading decentralized exchange (DEX) for Ethereum (ETH) and also operating on Polygon since December 2021, said:

Porygon needs to do something publicly to fix the Reorg problem. Yesterday’s block 157, December’s 120 block reorg is not good, it could break bridges, cryptocurrency exchanges, etc.

Yes. For the second update, we will put it out there soon. Testing rigorously right now.

Polygon co-founder Jaynti Kanani responded to Hayden’s allegations. Implemented one of the two measures (reducing sprint size) in January. He also promises to announce the second measure (getting finality within seconds) soon.

Polygonscan Down

It seems like Polygonscan is having some issues. You can use OKLink explorer in the meanwhile https://t.co/nt6vhGdF62

On the 23rd, the polygon explorer “Polygonscan” stopped for two hours. Since the transaction history was not updated during this time, rumors spread on Twitter that the Polygon Blockchain was down. This issue appears to be separate from the Reorg issue, with Polygon Labs admitting that “block production never stopped.”

What is a polygon

A project to tackle the scalability problem of Ethereum. In addition to the most well-known “Polygon PoS”, it has developed multiple solutions such as “Polygon Edge” and “Polygon Zero”.
