Polygon SVM release plan

Eclipse, which develops blockchain interoperability technology, announced on the 24th the release plan for Solana’s (SOL) Layer 2 solution “Polygon SVM”, which is compatible with Polygon (MATIC).

Polygon SVM is a Layer 2 (L2) blockchain based on Optimistic Rollups technology. Although transaction processing is performed at L2, the validity of transactions and data storage utilize the security of the L1 Solana blockchain.

Originally, when expanding the product from Solana to Polygon, it is necessary to rewrite the smart contract because the development language and environment are different. Solana uses the programming language Rust, which is not compatible with the EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) widely used by other blockchains such as Polygon.

Polygon SVM, on the other hand, provides a computing environment for deploying to polygons. Compatible with Solana’s smart contract operating environment, developers can immediately deploy existing dApps (decentralized apps) on Solana.

For Solana dApps, Polygon SVM enables multi-chain deployment, making it easier to expand the business scale.

The Polygon SVM testnet will be launched during the first quarter (January-March) of 2023, with the mainnet launch scheduled for the second quarter.

What is Eclipse

Eclipse is a provider of customizable rollup technology compatible with multiple Layer 1 blockchains including Solana (SOL) and Cosmos (ATOM). We aim to make it possible to build your own rollup with Solana OS using any blockchain.

Eclipse raised 1.3 billion yen ($9 million) in a seed round that closed in September 2022. Solana founder Anatoly Yakovenko also invested.

Neel Somani, the founder of Eclipse, has suggested to the overseas media TechCrunch that he plans to deploy “SeaLevel Virtual Machine (SVM)” for EVM compatible chains other than polygons.
