Worldcoin, the blockchain identity project founded by the duo of OpenAI, announced in a press release on June 29 that it will merge with Okta and launch its identity protocol, World ID, in Germany.

World ID authentication will be introduced first in Germany, where users will be fully authenticated using custom-designed hardware that employs biometric data. The hardware, called Orbs, will be available in Berlin and then all over Germany.

Okta is an identity and access management software provider with “hundreds of millions of users,” according to a blog post by Okta’s CTO and Chief Architect Jon Todd. , targeting billions of people.

A “Sign in with Worldcoin” option has appeared on Okta’s marketplace for authentication solutions, Auth0, allowing developers to adopt it as a sign-in option for their apps alongside Google and Facebook. World ID is Worldcoin’s identity protocol that uses zero-knowledge proofs and biometrics to verify that users are human and unique.

To be fully verified by Worldcoin’s protocol, users must scan their iris with Orbs available at specific locations. Orbs scans a user’s iris and uses artificial intelligence to create a unique code, or cryptographic ID. The processing of biometric data into ID happens in near-real time, and the resulting digital key is stored on the user’s device. By default, Orbs does not store data retrieved during processing.

The user can also choose to retain the data, “Then the data will be encrypted and can be used to improve the accuracy and comprehensiveness of the model,” said Tools for Humanity, which develops Worldcoin. Director Tiago Sada said.

World ID is said to be more private than other sign-in options like Google. “While developers don’t have to deal with it, it keeps the protocol’s privacy guarantees behind the scenes,” Sada said. By integrating with Okta, Worldcoin can be used in thousands of applications, and developers basically need to flip a switch and make a few code changes, Sada said.

Additionally, World ID uses biometric data to help developers and applications distinguish between humans and bots, making it easier to combat fraud.

According to World App, Worldcoin has 1.9 million users in 30 countries.
