Senator Bob Menendez and his wife have been accused of taking bribes for corrupt actions, including using his political power to help Egypt. Prosecutors in Manhattan have charged them with accepting money from three businessmen in New Jersey.
Menendez, a 69-year-old who heads the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, had previously faced charges in New Jersey for accepting gifts and campaign contributions from a wealthy supporter in exchange for political favors.
A part of the indictment reads, “Those bribes included cash, gold, payments toward a home mortgage, compensation for a low-or-no-show job, a luxury vehicle, and other things of value.”
The Associated Press tried to contact a lawyer for Menendez’s wife, but there was no response. They also left messages for Menendez’s Senate spokesperson and political consultant.
In response to the news, XRP lawyer John Deaton expressed his belief that corruption isn’t limited to just Senator Bob Menendez and isn’t confined to one political party. He mentioned several politicians from the Democratic and Republican parties, including Speaker Pelosi, Leader McConnell, and Senator Warren, suggesting corruption in their ranks as well.
He wrote on X, “Anybody who believes Bob Menendez is the only corrupt Senator or Representative in Washington must be brain dead. My statement equally applies to the Republicans as it does to the Democrats. @SpeakerPelosi is corrupt. @LeaderMcConnell is corrupt. @ewarren = corruption.”
Deaton questioned why these politicians seem reluctant to leave office, even when facing health challenges, insinuating that they might be influenced to maintain their positions.
Last October, Menendez announced that federal authorities were investigating him. Now, prosecutors want him to surrender assets, such as his New Jersey home, a 2019 Mercedes-Benz, and around $566,000 in cash, gold bars, and bank account funds.
