Poetry works by Bitcoin Ordinals

The long-established auction house Sotheby’s held an auction for the Bitcoin (BTC) NFT (non-fungible token) project “Ordinals” until the 22nd. Among them, a digital poem was sold for 0.28 BTC (approximately 1.8 million yen).

Michael Bouhana, head of digital art at Sotheby’s, said “Cord” is the first time Sotheby’s has sold a poem by an individual, excluding manuscripts and books.

This work is by humanities scholar and poet Ana Maria Caballero. In addition to the Ordinal, buyers will also receive a signed print of the poem.

Caballero said the auction sale of “Code” is “a great opportunity to make a statement that words, language and poetry have value in and of themselves.” He goes on to say that his works do not have accompanying music or images, indicating that the poems themselves are works of art.

She continued that the theme of this poem is motherhood, which is especially meaningful in the field of crypto assets (virtual currency), which tends to be male-dominated. Caballero said the auction for “Code” received more than 40 bids.

The sale of “Code” was held as part of an event entitled “Natively Digital,” in which Sotheby’s selected ordinals were sold.

One of the ordinals from Far’s “Quantum Cats” collection sold for more than 37 million yen ($250,000) during the auction. FAR said he invited Caballero because he thought the theme of this curation should be genealogy in blockchain.

Shroomtoshi, one of the event participants, was also an artist featured when Sotheby’s held its first Ordinal auction last December.
