Donald Trump emphasized his opposition to central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) at a rally in Laconia, New Hampshire, on the night of January 22nd.

“Mr. Vivek wanted this. I will never allow the creation of a central bank digital currency,” Trump said. This is a reference to Vivek Ramaswamy, a crypto supporter who withdrew from the race after a disappointing performance in Iowa.

Trump has conveyed the same message during his campaign so far.

“This is a dangerous threat to freedom, and I will prevent it from coming to America,” he previously said. “Such a currency would give the federal government absolute control over your money. They could take your money and you wouldn’t even know it was gone.”

Recently, fellow CBDC critic Ron Desantis, the governor of Florida, withdrew from the race and supported Trump.

“It’s clear that the vast majority of Republican primary voters want to give Donald Trump another chance,” he said in a video posted online. “I signed a pledge to support the Republican candidate, and I intend to honor that pledge.”

CoinDesk’s Jesse Hamilton wrote in a recent article that with DeSantis and Ramaswamy withdrawing from the primary race, crypto assets may take a backseat.

Although crypto assets are not a central issue in the 2024 US presidential election, they have been in the spotlight as a topic of conversation among Republican candidates. However, the recent withdrawal of major candidates and the lack of focus on crypto assets by the remaining candidate, Nikki Haley, could further reduce the profile of the debate.

However, CoinDesk reported last year that CBDC was the hottest topic in DeSantis’ Florida office (as governor, not Republican presidential candidate), suggesting voters may want to hear more. remains.
