Two Ripple Executives Visit Japan

Two key executives from Ripple will attend Asia’s largest Web3 conference hosted by CoinPost.

One of them, David Schwartz (Ripple CTO), will elaborate on the latest trends in the field of tokenization of real assets (Real World Assets, RWAs), and introduce RWA implementation cases in the XRP Ledger. His lecture will be held on July 25th, Day 1, from 4:50 PM to 5:10 PM on the International Stage, 7th Floor, Building B.

In addition, Emi Yoshikawa (Ripple’s VP of Strategy and Operations) will have a dialogue with the Japan team representative of the global Web3 project on the theme of “strategies for successful business in Japan.” Mr. Yoshikawa’s session will be held on July 26th from 2:45 PM to 3:10 PM on the international stage “B building 7th floor”.

The recent SEC and Ripple court rulings have brought a bright spot to the digital currency industry as a whole. On July 14, a court ruled that Ripple’s sale of XRP tokens on cryptocurrency exchanges did not violate federal securities laws. As a result, regulations on the business model of digital asset exchanges have become clearer, and the impact of the resumption of handling of XRP by Coinbase, a major exchange in the United States, has been seen.

Since the SEC filed a lawsuit in December 2020, Ripple has been engaged in a battle that has become a symbol of the cryptocurrency market for about three years, and it is expected to continue. During that time, the Ripple and XRP open source ecosystems continued to grow. The two sessions will provide deep insight into the potential of the Real Asset Tokenized Market (RWA) and the path to success for the Web3 project in Japan.

Speaker profile

Ripple CTO David Schwartz is one of the original architects of the open-source distributed ledger network XRPLedger. He is also popularly known as “JoelKatz” and has a large following within the digital currency community.

The virtual currency XRP is the native token of XRPLedger, and various use cases are being built around the world, including the bridge currency in the remittance platform “ODL” provided by Ripple.

Prior to joining Ripple, Schwartz was the CTO of a Santa Clara-based software development company called WebMaster Incorporated. He has developed encrypted cloud storage and enterprise messaging systems for major organizations such as CNN and the National Security Agency (NSA).

Ripple’s vice president of strategy and operations, Emi Yoshikawa, also leads corporate strategy and business operations, as well as joint venture partnerships. Yoshikawa is also a part-time associate professor at the Kyoto University Graduate School of Survival Studies (GSAIS), promoting blockchain research cooperation between industry and academia. She also serves on the board of directors of Japan’s largest money transfer company, SBI Remit.

Yoshikawa holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). She was named “Most Powerful Woman in Bay Area Business” by the San Francisco Business Times in 2021.

Real Asset Tokenization (RWA) Market

There is growing interest in the Real Asset Tokenization (RWA) marketplace from governments, asset managers and others to digitize traditional assets and make them tradable on the blockchain. Tokenization of real estate, gold, government bonds, etc. will enable investors around the world to trade these tokens 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

According to the Boston Consulting Group, by 2030, the real asset tokenization market could reach trillions of dollars. In particular, real estate tokenization will be an important use case for the financial services and government sectors.

In fact, Ripple is participating in the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA)’s e-HKD pilot program. The company leverages its CBDC platform and a private version of the XRP Ledger (XRPL) to provide real estate asset tokenization capabilities. This will enable the issuance and distribution of e-HKD and real estate tokens, as well as lending functions.

For Hong Kong residents, this is a new way to manage their assets faster and more efficiently. Banks, on the other hand, could benefit from faster loan turnover and more payment options.

Japan and Web3

Web3 (Decentralized Web) is a non-centralized Internet that utilizes public blockchains (permissionless decentralized networks). Use cases such as financial and asset transactions using NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and crypto assets (virtual currencies), and autonomous organization operations (DAO) are emerging.

Interest in the blockchain ecosystem is growing in the Japanese market as Japanese government leaders work to strengthen the technology in the country. However, there are many issues to be addressed in order to create new value and accelerate innovation, such as the development of an environment such as a legal system suitable for companies and individuals to advance into Web3.

In a session entitled “Strategy for Successful Business in Japan,” we hear from the builders and operators of Japanese ecosystems about what works and what doesn’t. The participants who exchanged opinions with Emi Yoshikawa, Vice President of Strategy and Operations at Ripple, are as follows.

・Ms. Yoriko Beer, Blockchain Project Polygon Labs Japan Head-BD

・ Shiho Watanabe, President and CEO of Shibuya Startups Co., Ltd., a startup project in Shibuya Ward
