Released avatars that can be used in the game

Major game company Ubisoft will release the avatar of the popular character “Rabbids” in the form of NFT for the metaverse game “The Sandbox” on the 22nd.

Polygon has grown exponentially.

To continue on this path of stupendous growth we have crystallized our strategy for the next 5 yrs to drive mass adoption of web3 by scaling Ethereum.

2,066 NFT (non-fungible token) avatars will be sold on the Polygon (MATIC) network. Each NFT will be sold for 100 SAND (equivalent to 10,000 yen at the time of writing the article).

The avatar is themed around Chinese New Year as 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit. Players who purchase avatars can enter the Metaverse and control Rabbids characters for a Lunar New Year-exclusive experience.

Each character has in-game benefits such as airdrops, surprises, and access to avatars that can be controlled in the sandbox.

Sandbox will launch the Rabbids game on February 28th as part of ongoing public testing. In the future, avatar holders are expected to have the opportunity to earn crypto assets (virtual currency) SAND through gameplay.

What is the Metaverse

A multiplayer 3D virtual reality world built on the Internet. You can enjoy various ways using avatars. For example, the in-game metaverse called “The Sandbox” provides voxel art creation tools and game creation tools, allowing users to create their own games and facilities.

Initiatives for Web3

Ubisoft is a major game studio known for the popular game “Assassin’s Creed”. Focusing on Web3, we have been working on NFT from early on.

In 2021, it invested in sandbox developer Animoca Brands. In February 2022, it said it planned to make Ubisoft’s intellectual property (IP) available in the sandbox metaverse.

At this time, we had already planned to make Rabbids characters available in the sandbox, but this time, this plan has been realized over the course of a year.

In addition, in December 2021, using the Tezos (XTZ) blockchain, the NFT platform “Ubisoft Quartz” will be launched in beta for users in some regions such as the United States and Europe.

First, we distributed free NFTs that can be used in the Windows PC version of the game “Ghost Recon Breakpoint”. NFT is an NFT called “Digit” and can be used as equipment such as guns, helmets, and jackets in the game. It could also be traded between players.

So far, “Ubisoft Quartz” has not released any other NFT collections. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said in September 2022 that the company was still “in research” about implementing Web3. He suggests it’s an experimental stage with lots of trial and error.

In a recent move, Ubisoft is working with decentralized database startup Aleph.im to develop smart contracts for fully decentralized NFTs on the Tezos chain.

These smart contracts can hold the code that powers decentralized apps (dApps) or NFT projects.

What are dApps

An abbreviation of “Decentralized Applications”, it is called “decentralized application” in Japanese. The main feature is that there is no centralized administrator. The most popular is the Ethereum blockchain, where apps such as games and decentralized exchanges (DEXs) are being developed.
