University of Toronto joins UBRI

It was revealed on the 12th that Canada’s prestigious University of Toronto will participate in Ripple’s University Blockchain Initiative (UBRI). The University of Toronto plans to set up validators for its distributed ledger network, the XRP Ledger.

UBRI is an organization formed by collaboration between Ripple Inc. and top universities around the world, and aims to promote academic research, technological development, and innovation related to blockchain technology, crypto assets (virtual currencies), and digital payments.

Ripple has invested over 280 million yen ($2 million) in partner universities in Canada over the past five years. He has promoted the progress of research and education based on blockchain technology. Currently, the University of Waterloo and Toronto Metropolitan University are listed as UBRI partners in Canada, and the University of Toronto has recently joined.

Professor Andreas Veneris of the University of Toronto (Electrical and Information Engineering, Computer Science) said:

I have been keeping an eye on Ripple for 10 years. Ripple was a pioneer in blockchain technology. Hosting the XRP Ledger validator aligns with our ongoing mission to deepen blockchain understanding and win the trust of the public.

An XRP Ledger validator is a contributor in the XRP distributed ledger network who agrees on the state of the ledger according to the consensus protocol to improve the security and performance of the network. Trustworthy companies, institutions and individuals serve it. At the time of writing, the XRP Ledger has about 112 validators participating, confirming that while the number of Ripple-related ones is declining, decentralization is progressing.

Ripple’s expansion into Canada

UBRI also aims to support the interconnected structure of academic consortia around the world. Professor Atefeh Mashatan, director of the Cybersecurity Laboratory at the Ted Rogers School of Management, Toronto Metropolitan University, said:

With the support of Ripple, we aim to understand the challenges and opportunities organizations face when adopting cryptocurrencies as a payment method. It also includes cross-jurisdictional transactions. This is pioneering and interdisciplinary research at the intersection of technology and information systems management research.

The fifth annual UBRI Connect conference will be held on October 12-13 at the Ted Rogers School of Business at Toronto Metropolitan University. UBRI Connect brings together hundreds of academics, researchers and thought leaders from the UBRI network from more than 50 universities in 24 countries to showcase blockchain initiatives, share knowledge and drive future research and development.

Ripple expects community-driven utilities to grow on the XRP ledger. In order to further promote blockchain research and development in academia, the company plans to recruit more talented people from all over Canada.

Ripple has expanded its Toronto team to over 30 full-time team members since July 2022. Over the next two years, Ripple plans to expand the office to more than 70 employees, further expanding its business. Team members in the region will support business unit RippleX in addition to product design, technical services and delivery in general.
